“Business Deal” was the first single off the “New Love Is Easy” album (2021) as The Ex-Bombers entered firmly into a delightfully sinister psychedelic state. With the song's subject matter hitting a bit to close to the heart, the pair went about matching the visuals to the sinister sounds and aural bursts of color onto Super 8 film.
The music video visually contrasts the making of music with the business of music. It draws its inspiration from New Hollywood films, the psych-exploitation movement, and sketchy independent cinema.
The performance was filmed in an empty art gallery with only a liquid light projected on a giant blank canvases. It was captured entirely on Kodak Ektachrome color reversal film, which brings out the vibrancy of the color during the making of music, which is in stark contrast to the black and white representations of music business. As it is Super 8, the film ratio was much lower than modern productions as every angle being done in a single take only mirroring the performance and energy of a live show.
The visualizations of music business plays with a simple temporal distortion. The viewer sees the after, but must wait as the film reverses to reveal the before. This section was shot entirely on black and white reversal film and the camera was completely static, which is again in contrast to the energy of the camera movement in the making of music section. As previously mentioned, as it was Super 8 film, every take was the only take in this business of music section, including the demonstration of a “Nashville Handshake.”
